Physical Education Intermediate 2 and Higher

These two courses will be taught together as much of the work relates.

Entry Requirements

For entry to Intermediate 2

  • A General Level award in Standard Grade Physical Education where no element is lower than 3.
  • An Intermediate 1 course award in Physical Education (when applicable.)
  • Applicants not holding any of the above can be interviewed by the Head of Department to ascertain suitability for the course.

For entry to Higher

  • A Credit Level award in Standard Grade Physical Education where no element is lower than a 2.
  • An Intermediate 2 course award in Physical Education at A
  • A credit level pass at Standard Grade English is recommended
  • Applicants not holding any of the above must be interviewed by the Head of Department to ascertain suitability for course.

Course Descriptions

Both courses have two units.
 

Intermediate 2 and Higher Units

Content

PERFORMANCE (60 hrs)

Each student is required to develop his/her performance in three activities. These are likely to be badminton, basketball and hockey

ANALYSIS OF PERFORMANCE (40 hrs)

Students will apply knowledge and understanding gained in four areas -

  1. Performance Appreciation
  2. Preparation of the body
  3. Skills and techniques
  4. Structures, strategies and composition to bring about improvements in their performance

Performance is the prime focus of the course and as a result the units will be taught in an integrated way. Performance and Analysis of performance units will be delivered concurrently.

Assessment

Performance Unit:

As activities are completed students will be assessed internally to determine unit achievement (pass or fail) and will be given a band for course achievement. This band is worth 50% of the final course grade.

Analysis of Performance Unit:

There will be an end of unit test and the student must pass it.
To gain the course award a student must sit an external exam on the work of this unit.

Intermediate 2 - 2 hours

Higher - 2½ hours

Leisure Physical Education

A free standing course which provides the opportunity to participate in leisure activities and experience the physical and social benefits of P.E.

There are no unit tests or examinations.

Entry Requirements

  • a willingness to participate in a variety of activities
  • at the discretion of the department

Content

Activities will be agreed at the start of the course by staff / student negotiation.

A variety of activities will be offered, all of which will develop fitness and the social aspects of sport, from individual activities to competitive and non-competitive team games.

The school has a corporate membership of the local Putton Mill Fitness Centre and Golf Driving Range.

Senior Students who are not members may be able to use the facilities for 50p per session during Leisure P.E. time.

Sports Studies / Developing Leadership Capacity

Entry Requirements

  • Experience in Certificate Physical Education
  • or the recommendation of the P.E. Department

Pupils considering this course should speak to Mr Fleming or Mr Gracey

Only Fifth year in Column 2 will be considered. Because of the nature of the course there will be a limit of 15.

Course

The main thrust of the course is teaching primary school children various aspects of Physical Education.

You will teach Swimming, Basketball, Gymnastics and Dance. You may be asked to help teach First or Second year classes Football, Rugby and Hockey

You will need to be an enthusiastic, trustworthy student with a positive attitude who is prepared to be patient and understanding with primary school pupils.

You will be asked to lead some lessons and give support in others.

You must be able to work as part of a “ teaching team” with your fellow students.

You may be asked to organise primary school festivals ( eg.Hockey, Rugby, Football)

You may also be asked to take part in Refereeing Courses and gain some basic coaching awards.
