Physical Education Standard Grade (General/Credit)

This course is elective, and will be in addition to the core PE course followed by all Third and Fourth Year Students.

There are four aspects of the course: -

  1. Practical Performance
  2. Knowledge and Understanding
  3. Evaluating
  4. Personal and Social Development

Aspects 1, 2 and 3 will be assessed, the weighting for the final grade being:
1 - 50%, 2 - 25%, and 3 - 25%.

1. Practical Performance: The teacher will assess this, a final grade being given overall, taking into account the grades given for each individual component.

These components are:

  • Gymnastics
  • Rugby/Hockey
  • Lifesaving or Volleyball
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Athletics

In taking into account the overall grade, a student is allowed to drop their poorest grade and an average of the other five grades is given.

2. Knowledge and Understanding is taught mainly through practical activities, although some classroom work is required. It will be assessed externally by an exam at the end of Fourth Year. Other components may also have worksheets and short answer tests. Knowledge and Understanding covers the principles of fitness and how we acquire skill.

3. Evaluating is taught in some of the components – it is the ability to observe and comment on performance. There is an external exam in evaluating at the end of the course.

The practical element is the main single feature of the course, and failure to meet the practical commitment, without due reason, may result in no award.

Physical Education Core Subject

During Third and Fourth Year all students have the opportunity to develop and enhance skills introduced during First and Second Year. The emphasis is to allow every student to achieve his or her potential. From the wide base presented in First Year, activities are studied in more depth. Students will be allowed some degree of choice, guided by teachers.

These are:

  • Outdoor Games
  • Gymnastics
  • Indoor Games
  • Athletics
  • Aquatics
  • Fitness Aerobics
  • Racquet Sports

The course is practical by nature and students are therefore expected, barring medical reasons, to come with the appropriate kit for each activity. Assessment is based around a grade for attainment and effort plus a written comment by the class teacher on the work done.

The aims of the course are:

  • Learn Skills
  • Fun
  • Participation
  • A Positive Attitude to Healthy living and a carry-over to Post School Life
