Music Intermediate (Level 1 & 2)
The music department offers National Qualifications – Intermediate 1 and 2. These are roughly equivalent to General and Credit levels at Standard grade. One of the main advantages of these courses however is that they offer a smooth progression through Higher to Advanced level.
The courses continue the approach and balance of activities establishes in first and second year, i.e. performance on two instruments and listening skills.
Performing
Playing two instruments solo and/or in a group. Virtually all instruments (including voice) are acceptable for the final examination.
Listening
This involves the identification of a range of musical concepts in an examination paper. Answers are mainly multiple choice.
What is expected of you?
- A willingness to practice regularly outside class time
- Some success on two instruments in first and second year
- Involvement in musical activities within school
Pupils who are uncertain as to their suitability for the course should seek advice from their Music Teacher
Assessment
Pupils work towards a final exam in fourth year. The level of presentation for any individual depends on progress throughout the course. Performing and Listening are assessed externally. Composition is assessed internally on a pass/fail basis. Individual ‘units’ are also available in performing.
