French / Spanish Advanced Higher
Entry Requirements
A C pass or above at Higher in French or Spanish
Course description
The Advanced Higher course offers the chance to study a language to a level which will prepare you for University. It is a challenging and enjoyable course which will provide deep insights into the language and literature of France or Spain.
Assessment
Course Structure – 2 Units
- Language Unit
Three themes are offered in the Language unit
* Personal, social and cultural issues
* Topical and cultural issues
* Environmental issues
- Extended Reading and Viewing Unit
These units will be assessed internally on a PASS/FAIL basis.
External Assessment
The main difference from Higher is:
- The preparation of a folio which will include 2 essays – both taken from the Extended Reading and Viewing Unit.
- Speaking will be tested by an external examiner in March.

French Higher

Entry Requirements
The Higher French course offers you the opportunity to gain a qualification which represents a high level of competence in the language. The estimated entry requirement would normally be a Credit level pass with a 1 or 2 in the Writing element.
Course Description
The course consists of an 80 hour Language unit with 3 themes: Lifestyles, Education and Work and the Wider World. The second unit - Extended Reading and Viewing involves the presentation and discussion of up to date texts, a book or a video with a piece of writing to support the presentation. We would hope to offer you a choice in the material to be studied.
Assessment
Both units are internally assessed in all four skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. These skills are also assessed externally at the end of the course. The breakdown of marks in the external assessment is: Speaking 25%, Listening 20%, Reading 30% and Writing 25%.
To achieve the course award, the student must pass both units and the external assessment.

French Intermediate 2

Entry Requirements
The estimated entry requirement would normally be a General level pass in French.
Course Description
The Intermediate 2 French course offers you the opportunity to gain a qualification which represents a good level of competence in the language. The course consists of an 80 hour Language unit with 3 themes: Lifestyles, Education and Work and the Wider World. The second unit - Personal Communication involves reading a letter and writing a letter of 100-120 words in response.
Assessment
Both units are internally assessed in all four skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. These skills are also assessed externally at the end of the course. The breakdown of marks in the external assessment is: Speaking 30%, Listening 20%, Reading 30% and Writing 20%.
To achieve the course award, the student must pass both units and the external assessment.

Spanish Higher

Entry Requirements
A Credit level pass at Standard Grade with a 1 or 2 in the Writing element or a pass at Intermediate 2 Spanish, or an A pass at Intermediate 1 level.
Students who have an A at Intermediate 1 are welcome to join the class, but must be aware of the considerable commitment required to succeed at Higher
Course Description
The course consists of 2 Units
- The Language Unit which has 3 themes : Lifestyles, Education & Work and The Wider World
- Language in Work which involves using the language in work-related contexts
Assessment
Both units have Internal Assessments and all 4 skills are assessed for the External Exam as follows:
- Speaking 25%
- Reading 30%
- Listening 20%
- Writing 25%
To achieve the Course Award, students must pass both the Unit and External Assessments

Spanish Intermediate 2

Entry Requirements
A 3 at Standard Grade or an A or B pass at Intermediate 1
Course Description
The Intermediate 2 Spanish course offers you the opportunity to gain a qualification which represents a good level of competence in the language. The course consists of an 80 hour Language Unit with three themes; Lifestyles, Education and Work and The Wider World. The second unit – Personal Communication – involves reading a letter and writing one of 100 – 120 words in response
Assessment
All four skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing) are internally assessed across both units.
These skills are also assessed externally at the end of the course. The breakdown of marks in the external assessment is: Speaking 30%, Listening 20%, Reading 30% and Writing 20%.
To achieve the course award, the student must pass both units and the external assessment.
