These two courses will be taught together as the content is very similar.
Entry Requirements
Intermediate 2
- A pass at Intermediate 1 Health and Food Technology
- Applicants who do not hold the above should have credit level in all subjects in S4 and will be interviewed by the Principal Teacher to assess suitability.
Higher
- An A pass at Intermediate 1 Health and Food Technology and passes at Intermediate 2 Units
- Applicants who do not hold the above must discuss entry to the course with the Principal Teacher
Course Description
The Int 2 course consists of 3 units …
- Management of practical activities
nutrition, diet related to health, food preparation techniques, cooking methods, choice of food, meal production.
- Consumer Studies
food production and processing, consumer demands on food, new development in food production and packaging, consumer protection, comparative testing.
- Product Development
producing new products, function of ingredients, sensory evaluation, risk assessment, quality control.
The Higher course consists of 2 units …
- Resource Management
nutrition, storage and preparation effects on nutrients, relationship between diet, lifestyle and health, product development, functional properties of food.
- Consumer Studies
safety and quality of food, consumer protection, European consumer, technological innovations related to food, social trends, market research, launching a new food product.
Assessment
All outcomes for the above units must be achieved to gain a course award. In addition there is:
- Technological Project: carried out in class time (approx 20 hrs)
Int 2 – 50 marks, Higher – 70 marks
- Exam at end of course: (Int 2 - 1 ½ hrs) – 60 marks, (Higher – 2 hrs) – 60 marks.

This would be useful for students interested in a career in the clothing/fashion/textile industry and a good line to an Art related career.
The course is based on practical work and could include making beanbags, hats, items of clothing eg leisure, evening etc.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course but an interest in this subject is essential.
All applicants will be interviewed by Principal Teacher.
Course Description
The course consists of 3 units …
1 Design and Make (1) 40 hrs
Draw up design specification – item then made in accordance with this.
2 Developing Craft Skills in Textiles 40 hrs
Using a variety of equipment and techniques.
3 Practical Fabric Skills 40 hrs
Comparison of item made using a bought pattern with a similar shop item.
You will make a minimum of three items and will be required to provide pattern and fabric to achieve a course award.
Assessment
All outcomes for the above units must be achieved (ongoing throughout the year). In addition there is a 10 hour practical assignment which is externally set and marked (this will be done towards the end of the course).

Survival Cookery (S6 only)

This is an interest course designed for your healthy survival should you find that you have to look after yourself sometime in the near future.
The course will consist mainly of practical cookery and will incorporate
Basic cookery skills:
- Nutrition – feeding yourself – healthy diet!
- Budgeting – living within your means!
You will be expected to:
- enjoy eating and trying new foods.
- bring suitable container each lesson
- pay a small contribution towards the cost of food.
