Intermediate (Level 1 & 2)

Intermediate 1 and 2 Health and Food Technology and all of the above skills are transferable to other subjects within the School and when you leave School. All groups will begin by doing Intermediate 1 in S3 and if successful then progress to Intermediate 2 in S4.
Intermediate 1
The course consists of 3 units:
Food for Health – 40 Hours – Looks at nutrient dietary targets and needs of individuals.
Food Technology – 40 Hours – Looks at technological developments in food preparation and production and it’s effects on lifestyle.
Product Development – 40 hours – looks at functions of foods, hygiene and the stages in the design process.
To gain a course award pupils have to pass all unit assessments and the course assessment with is a 10-hour practical assignment (in class time at the end of the year).
Intermediate 2 Units
Management of Practical Activities – 40 Hours – looks at the nutrition, diet, food preparation techniques, cooking methods and meal production.
Pupils will be expected to:
- Try their best
- Have good attendance
- Work in a sensible manner in the kitchen and use equipment safely
- Provide a suitable container for taking food home and pay a small contribution towards cost of food.
