Home Economics S1/S2
In First Year you will get one lesson of Home Economics per week, and time is spent equally between food and fabric.
By the end of the Fabric unit in S1 you should be able to
- draw a simple design on to paper
- apply colour/design using a variety of methods
- correctly use small equipment
- thread up and use a sewing machine
- make a fleece hat and complete a simple design project
In Food you will be able to take part in a variety of activities and by the end of the unit you should be able to
- recognise and demonstrate the need for hygiene and safety rules in the kitchen
- be able to identify and group foods into the five food groups
- demonstrate basic practical skills
- follow simple recipes/instructions
- investigate information found on food packaging
- make suggestions on how you can adapt your eating habits to take account of current dietary guidelines using a computer program
- co-operate within your group to plan and prepare the meals for the First Year outdoor residential project
You will be working on your own in fabric and in food and in groups depending on the activity.
You will get homework most weeks and you will be expected to bring the appropriate equipment to the lessons.
You will be assessed every lesson - it will be continuous in both practical and written activities so we expect you to try your hardest at every lesson and discuss any problems with your teacher.
