What you can expect from the course?
Geography is the study of the Earth and an attempt to understand the things that we see around us. Principal aspects such as mountains, rivers, seas, vegetation, weather and human aspects such as farming, population, settlement, industry, aid and trade.
A very important part of geography is looking at how we have used and adapted the environment around us – sometimes changing it for the better, and sometimes not.
Fieldwork and practical methods are included in the course and we presently take all Standard grade students on a field trip to a glaciated area. By the end of the course you will have mastered such skills as map reading, interpretation of photographs and handling a variety of resource material. Each topic has homework and most have an end of unit test based mainly on Standard Grade questions. You will be expected to complete all work set, including homework.

Your assessment will be in two parts:
- Your teacher will continually assess class work, homework, unit tests and practical work. The Prelim in Fourth Year will be based on the work carried out up to that time and will be similar to the SQA exam.
- A written paper set and marked by the Scottish Qualification Authority. This written paper will contain two elements.
A: Knowledge and Understanding
The understanding of key ideas and terms, and examples we will study.
B: Enquiry Skills
The ability to draw conclusions from data, present a reasoned point of view based on evidence, and be able to identify and justify suitable techniques for gathering and processing information.
