The Berwickshire High School

English S3/S4

English Standard Grade (Foundation/General/Credit)

The Course

The main purpose of the Standard Grade English course is to continue to improve each student’s ability in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Coursework

Units of work of different lengths will involve reading novels, short stories, plays and poems, different types of writing for different purposes, group discussion and individual talk. Spelling, grammar and presentation will be given due attention.

Assessment

You will be assessed on the way you write about what you read, on writing for specific purposes, and on individual and group talk.

In Fourth Year you will compile a Folio of the five best pieces of coursework in reading and writing. The Scottish Qualifications Authority assesses this. Your teacher will award a Talk grade. At the end of Fourth Year you will sit an exam in reading and an exam in writing.

Sections

You will be placed in a section at the beginning of Third Year, which is decided by your coursework and class tests in Second Year. You may be moved at any time during the course, in the interest of raising attainment.

You will be expected to do homework regularly. Personal reading is strongly encouraged.
