The Berwickshire High School

English S1/S2

Content

The course follows 5-14 guidelines, concentrating on Levels C-F. The work covers Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening.

You will be encouraged to read a wide variety of fictional and non-fictional materials, from novels to Scottish ballads, from traditional (classic) literature to contemporary ones, from entertaining plays to information books on topics you are interested in.

You will write poems, stories, leaflets and script. You will learn to communicate well using accurate spelling and punctuation and good choice of language.

You will learn how to talk about your ideas and experiences, and to listen politely and co-operate with each other.

Classroom Arrangements

A variety of methods of working is adopted, to suit the variety of work.

There is some whole-class teaching; in addition, you can expect to work on your own, in pairs and in groups, as appropriate.

Classes have a maximum of 20 pupils, depending on the size of year group and the number of teaching sections.

Expectations

We expect you to work hard, to behave well and to co-operate with the teacher and each other. We insist on politeness and good manners. You should come equipped with pens, pencils, rulers, etc. You must write in blue or black ink, or with a sharp pencil. Some pieces can be done on the computer.

Homework is given regularly and must be handed in on time.

Skills

We expect you to work on and improve all your English skills in first and second year. We hope you will enjoy the work and become good readers, clear and accurate writers and confident speakers who can talk to groups, take part in discussions and respect other people's points of view.

Assessment

Most of the assessment in S1 and S2 is designed to identify development needs, set appropriate targets and help you develop skills and raise attainment. Assessment is a three stage process involving self assessment, peer assessment and, lastly, Teacher assessment. Your progress is checked regularly and results are recorded by you and by your Teacher to build up a profile of your ability and progress. You will sit National Tests in English when you are ready to – current progress and the dates of previous testing will inform this decision.
