Entry Requirements

Higher Graphic Communication at Grade A or B

Advanced Higher Course Description

The course aims to allow candidates to develop both manual and computer graphic skills and understanding beyond those involved in Higher Graphic Communication. This will provide the candidate with an insight into the way in which information presented graphically is an integral part of communication throughout business and industry as well as in the consumer environment.

Advanced Higher Assessment

In addition to the satisfactory achievement of the constituent units, candidates will be externally assessed in three parts:-

  • Examination paper (3 hours)
  • Computer-Aided 3D Modelling Folio - covering a prescribed sample of 3D modelling
  • Computer-Aided Graphic Presentation

Units for Advanced Higher

  1. Technical Graphics
    Apply manual techniques of geometric constructions to produce orthographic drawings: Apply manual techniques of 2-point measured perspective to architectural settings.
  2. Computer Aided 3D Modelling Visualisation & Presentation
    Create 3D Computer Aided Design surface models
    Create 3D Computer Aided Design solid models
    Produce Computer-Aided drawings from a 3D Computer Aided Design model
    Produce Computer-Aided rendered images from 3D Computer-Aided Design model
  3. Computer-Aided Graphic Presentation
    Evaluate the application of design principles in professional graphics presentations
    Design and produce a professional Graphic Presentation for a client group
    Desktop publishing characteristics are identified and their function described correctly

Graphic Communication Higher

Higher Entry Requirements

  • Intermediate 2 Art & Design at Grade A
  • or Intermediate 2 Graphic Communication Grade A or Grade B

Higher Course Description

The course develops the rationale of the Standard Grade and Intermediate 2 Courses by enhancing the ability to communicate information by graphical means. It focuses on the graphics involved at every stage in the progression from design through to marketing a product or service, and relates the work in school to that practised in the industrial world.

The computer is used as a learning and teaching aid throughout the course and opportunities are exploited in all topics to develop computer applications to the full including 3D modelling and rendering techniques.

Higher Assessment

To gain the award of the course, the student must pass all the assessments of the units listed below as well as external assessments. The external assessments will decide what grade will be awarded for the course. The external assessment will be in two parts.

  • Examination Paper (3 hours)
  • Thematic Presentation

    Illustration & Presentation Techniques

    Extended Orthographic Techniques
  3. Computer Graphics
    Computer Aided Draughting including 3D Modelling

Woodworking Intermediate 1 and 2

Entry Requirements

Open to those who have not done the course before

Course Description

The work is the same for each level. The quality of work produced in the units and the final project determines the level and grade awarded.

The tolerance for Intermediate 2 is + or – 1mm

The tolerance for Intermediate 1 is + or – 2mm

Unit 1: Flat frame construction

Practice joints and a mirror have to be produced to achieve this unit

Unit 2: Carcass construction

Practice joints and a bathroom cabinet have to be produced to achieve this

Unit 3: Machining and Finishing

To achieve this unit students must use a range of machines. The main vehicle of assessment is a table lamp

Final Project:

This project encompasses the skills acquired in the Units and takes them to a higher level. The grade awarded for the course depends on the skills demonstrated in this project. We currently make a wall clock for this part of the course.

All Units must be passed and the Final Project must be near completion to achieve a course award. Work must be carried out safely at all times using the techniques demonstrated by the teacher. Despite the inevitable disruption from a multitude of distractions, there will just be time to complete the course. You must however attend at every opportunity or you will not succeed.

We need to ask for a contribution towards the materials used in the course. This is currently £20 and must be paid in advance.
