Engineering Craft Skills (Intermediate Level 1 & 2)

About the course

This course seeks to improve the practical metalworking skills introduced in First and Second Year courses. Practical skills are useful for any student. For those hoping to take up employment in local trades, this course will give basic metalworking skills. It also gives a good background for anyone thinking of taking up a career in Engineering. Those who do not specialise in “practical” courses will still find the skills useful for home maintenance or hobbies.

The following Units will be taken over the two-year course:

  • Bench Skills (Metal)
  • Machine processes (Metal)
  • Fabrication & Welding

Each of these Units is individually credited by SQA if the required standards are met. A student can also gain a Course award if they complete all the Units and a project. That project would be tackled in the second year of the course. The overall grade is determined by the quality of the work done on the project.

All work is internally assessed by the teacher and externally assessed by an SQA moderator.

The models made are the same for Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2. The level of award is determined by the tolerance met and the type of joint used.

THE COURSE IS NOT AN EASY OPTION. THE STANDARDS REQUIRED ARE VERY HIGH.

What is expected of you?

You need to be able to measure accurately and use tools skilfully.

You must watch demonstrations very carefully to see the correct way of using tools and carrying out processes.

You have to produce your work with great accuracy to meet the requirements of the assessment.

Graphic Communication (Intermediate 2 / Intermediate 1)

About the course:

The course caters for students with a Credit, Credit/General or General recommendation. It allows smooth progression for students going onto Higher in fifth year and Advanced Higher in sixth year.

The course develops skills in sketching, drawing and presentation techniques as well as Computer generated 3D Modelling and Desk Top Publishing.

The course units are:

Technical Graphics 1
Pictorial and orthographic views and illustration techniques applied to everyday objects

Technical Graphics 2
Pictorial and additional orthographic views of more complex assemblies

Computer Graphics
3D modelling, generating Pictorial and orthographic views from the 3D model using CAD; adding lights and materials to the model. Producing Desk-Top-Publishing projects.

You will produce a Computer Graphics Folio from the best work from this unit. This will count towards your final assessment and be useful as evidence for post school courses.

What is expected of you:

  • You will need good graphics skills to cope with this course.
  • You must take pride in producing quality graphics work, as all paperwork must be completed to a high standard.
  • All assignments, Unit assessments and homework must be completed on time.

Product Design (Intermediate 2)

About the course:

This is a new course being offered by the department at this year-stage.

If you are Imaginative and Inventive, this could be the course for you. You will find out how designs are influenced by the human form and needs. You will also study materials and manufacturing processes so that you will know how particular ideas can be taken from the design stage to the finished article. You will evaluate existing products to help you develop your budding design talents.

You must of course be able to communicate your ideas and the early part of the course will be given to developing graphic techniques. These will enable you to produce quality representations of product designs.

Design skills are in demand in our current society and the course should help you towards entry to Design courses beyond school and then to employment. Companies like Dyson employ more engineers in designing than on manufacture.

You must pass assessments in all the course units:

  • Product Evaluation and Graphic Techniques;
  • Designing for People;
  • Designing for Manufacture and
  • Product Model.

The external assessment consists of a two-hour exam and a Design Assignment.

What is expected of you?

  • You will need very good graphics skills to cope with this course.
  • Obviously you must be imaginative and want to understand how things work.
  • You must take great pride in producing quality graphics work as all paperwork must be completed to a very high standard.
  • All assignments, Unit assessments and homework must be completed on time.

Woodwork (Access Level 3 and Intermediate)

About the course:

Woodworking skills are useful for any student. For those hoping to take up employment in local trades, this course will give basic woodworking skills. Those who do not specialise in “practical” courses will still find the skills useful for home maintenance or hobbies.

An introductory project will determine which level of course will be attempted. The units taken depend on the course.

The skills will be developed through the construction of useful articles wherever possible. Although the school will pay some of the cost, a charge will still have to be made for materials used.

If the Access 3 course taken is completed quickly, students will start the Intermediate course in Woodworking Skills. They should complete some units. Those that work hard could complete both courses.

What is expected from you?

THE COURSE IS NOT AN EASY OPTION. THE STANDARDS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP REQUIRED ARE HIGH.

  • You will need to be able to measure accurately.
  • You must watch demonstrations very carefully to see the correct way of using tools and carrying out processes. You must then use those methods.
  • You should produce your work with great care and accuracy to meet the requirements of assessment.
