The Berwickshire High School

Business Studies S3/S4

Business Management
Standard Grade (Foundation/General/Credit)

The course

Business Management aims to develop skills and knowledge in students which will allow them to access, understand and contribute to the dynamic and complex business and information environment.

Areas of Study

There are 4 areas of study:

  • What is business?
  • How do businesses develop and perform?
  • Which resources do businesses use?
  • How are businesses managed?

These four areas of study allow students to explore business management through a series of enquiries which incorporate the common four functional areas of business, namely Marketing, Human Resources, Operations and Finance, and provides opportunities for pupils to use IT skills to aid business decision making in real life simulated learning situations. This approach will contribute to the vocationally relevant and transferable skills required by industry and commerce.

Assessment Arrangements

Assessment for national certification will be based on:

  • Knowledge and Understanding (external)
  • Decision Making (external)
  • Practical Abilities (internal)

Practical Abilities will be examined internally through the use of a CD-Rom called Entrepreneur where students have to use the skills acquired during the course to make and justify their business decisions by running their own small 'virtual' business using the computer.
