Course Description
Art & Design (Enquiry - Expressive)
This course comprises of one compulsory 80 hour Unit, one optional 40 hour Unit plus 40 hours flexible time.Compulsory Unit : Expressive (80 hours)
You will be expected to develop the Enquiry through the study of a PERSONALLY selected area or theme based on the visual arts. A substantial amount of work with several outcomes is expected – 10 sheets x A1.
Optional units
1. Design Activity (40 hours)
This is a Design Unit with a brief completion of the design process including outcome linked to the topic/theme chosen for Expressive Unit – 6 sheets x A1.
2. Art & Design Studies or Visual Arts (40 hours)
This will take the form of a single study linked directly to the theme/topic chosen for Enquiry Expressive. This will involve:
- Research and investigation of the selected area.
- Communicating relevant information and informed personal views, opinions and judgements.
Assessment:
- Units are assessed in accordance with SQA guidelines.
- The course is assessed and marked by the SQA.
Art and Design Portfolio Preparation
Entry Requirements
Estimated successful completion of Higher course.
Course Description
The student is assumed to be preparing for entry into an Art & Design course or a course where portfolio work is required. The student is expected to be highly self-motivated and will work to a negotiated plan of work.
Assessment
There is no assessment.
Art and Design Higher
Entry Requirements
Estimated pass of Intermediate 2 at A.

There are a further 40 hours to cover aspects such as induction, consolidation, and preparation for external assessment, giving an overall total of 160 hours.
Assessment
- Both Design and Expressive Units sent to SQA for grading.
- Written paper marked by SQA.
- Art & Design studies graded internally as Pass/Fail.
All units and exams need to be passed successfully to gain the course award.
