What is the Parent Council?
During recent months a volunteer group consisting of parents and school staff have been working hard to develop the new Berwickshire High School Parent Council. Guided by information from the Scottish Borders Council Education department, and under the watchful eye of the Rector, Mr Kelly, a model constitution has been adapted to suit our school situation. These changes came about after the decision was taken on a national level to form a new partnership between former school boards, and (in our case) Parents Forum. A big thank you must go to everyone involved with the former groups, some of whom have even decided to continue their involvement with the new Parent Council!
What are the aims of the Parent Council?
- To work in partnership with the school, to create a welcoming school which is inclusive for all parents.
- To identify and represent the views of parents on the education provided by the school and other matters affecting the education and welfare of the pupils.
- To promote partnership between the school, its pupils all its parents and the wider community.
- To develop and engage in activities which support the education and welfare of the pupils.
To this end at our meeting in September, 2007, office bearers were elected, and during our October meeting the council membership was bolstered by other willing volunteers giving us our targeted twenty voting members – many thanks to all those who have decided to be involved.
How can you get involved?
As the parent of a child at the school you are automatically part of the wider Parent Forum (not to be confused with our former Parent group). This entitles you to be involved at many levels, and have your views or concerns heard. In achieving our aims we are considering forming a number of sub-groups that will cover a wide range of issues affecting your child’s education including, making sense of the curriculum, organising parents’ information evenings, fund raising, and even the Eco Schools project and healthy lifestyle initiatives, coupled of course with a group to look at the very exciting opportunities which exist for us in the development of the brand new school premises.
Please look out for information of up-coming meetings and events (on the This Term's Meetings/Events page), and join us in enhancing opportunities for your child during this exciting time in their education.
Ali Birkett, Chair of Parent Council
